Is it that whenever anyone else turns their attention to an artwork, the first thing they see is form?
And that this primacy of observation dominates further observation?
when people see deKooning, Pollock, Mitchell paintings, does the form ‘ab-ex painting’ dominate their observation?
when people watch TV, does the form ‘tv show’ dominate their experience?
when they hear jazz are they listening but not hearing the particular arrangement of textures and notes, but rather hearing the form ‘jazz’ ?
If so, I’ve had it so completely wrong for so long it’s not funny.
