Too often we’re told that art that doesn’t resonate with us is ‘challenging,’ and our inability to understand it is a failure of education, or open-mindedness.
Sometimes this is true.
Other times the art is simply stupid.
We’ve come to expect so little from art that our default response when we fail to connect is to shrug and say, “Yeah, that’s challenging.”
More often we need to finger bad art for what it is. And we need to hold artists responsible for showing us art with resonance.
