The substrate is the experiencer. We do things to the experiencer through the substrate the way you’d do things to someone through a voodoo doll. What we do to the painting is what we intend to do to and take for granted we are doing to the experiencer.
Through the medium of the painting we affect the experiencer.
In another sense the painting is the experiencer. What we do in the painting is what we intend to do and take for granted we are doing to the experiencer.
We make artworks that shrink the experiencer, that grow the experiencer, that expand or restrict the experiencer’s self-perception.
Kandinsky said “Color is the keyboard, the eyes are the harmonies, the soul is the piano with many strings. The artist is the hand that plays, touching one key or another, to cause vibrations in the soul.”
We experience art with our entire beings, both as art-makers and as not-art-makers.
